One Last Day in Taiwan

Image
Sunday in Tawain (which was really Saturday back home) was Taylor's 15th birthday! We started the celebration right away with a breakfast buffet. She had wanted to sleep in until 8am, but that buffet called at 7am (she was not thrilled with the rest of us). While at breakfast, we debated a plan for the day. Do we stick around Taipei and see different parts of the city? Or do we venture a little further out and see more of the surrounding area? Venturing won out, and not long after breakfast we were in a cab on our way to Wulai, a town famous for its hot springs and beautiful countryside setting -- about a 45-minute drive from Taipei. Getting to Wulai requires at least 15-20 minutes on a very windy road...I had flashbacks to our drive from BaƱos to Cuenca in Ecuador in 2022 (this was the drive where Taylor threw up in our snack bag, we bribed a policeman, and our driver was in a major hurry to drop us off). But we arrived in Wulai without incident. We exited our taxi and walked into...

From Liuqiu Back to Taipei

Saturday morning, I headed out early for another run. I saw one other runner and she was dressed in a jacket and pants. I about died for her. I mean, I just can't... It's seriously a bajillion degrees out. Our B&B hostess did not cook breakfast, so we scootered to the nearest 7-Eleven to grab some grub. I am slightly obsessed with the 7-Elevens in Taiwan. A quick Google search just informed me that there are more than 7,000 stores in this country, and they've been here since 1979. If you ever visit Taiwan, definitely dip into   some 7-Elevens. Some are even themed! Breakfast of champions. Checking out one more temple... At the Oceanic Pearl, we packed up once again and said goodbye to our wonderful hostess. She gifted us some little stuffed sea turtle keychains -- the sea turtles were wearing scooter helmets. My sea turtle's helmet said 'Merry Christmas.' Oddly, there were lots of Christmas decorations still up in Liuqiu (lights, reindeer, Christmas trees......

Living the Scooter Life

Friday morning, I was out the (hotel) door about 6am for a run. It was already so hot, so humid. I ran up a road, down the same road, around a school, back the same way, and returned to the Oceanic Pearl. I saw one other runner while I was out. Something tells me running isn't really a thing on Liuqiu (also, it's hilly!).  View from my run. I'm astounded at the number of video cameras across Taiwan. They are everywhere. Can you see the four cameras in this photo? I felt a little weird even taking the photo...like, are the Taiwan police going to come after me for snapping a pic of video cameras? Literally, they are all over. (Is this how they keep an eye on China? Is this why everyone and everything is so orderly? Inquiring minds want to know.) Our two scooters parked out front of the Oceanic Pearl Resort. #scooterlife Our sweet Oceanic Pearl hostess made breakfast for her guests. Breakfast opened at 7am, and we enjoyed another good buffet. After breakfast and before the bea...
